Fall Calendar Events, Metro Moncton, New Brunswick

by Heather Ferguson

The languid lassitude of long, hot summer days are drawing to a close as autumn, resplendent in her carnival colours, hovers on our doorsteps. Already, balmy evenings lengthen into cool nights a the whisper of a winter wind, perhaps not far off, lingers on the edge of our awareness.

Sussex Balloon FestivalYes, it’s fall in the Maritimes! As we awaken out of summer stupor and busy ourselves once again with work and school, a host of events and attractions appear to lead us on our way. A full roster of events at the Capitol Theatre, the Moncton Coliseum, the Riverview Arts Centre, and Le Théâtre l’Escaouette offer something entertaining for every budget and taste and events such as the Sussex Balloon Festival can almost make us feel that summer is still here.

Metro Moncton's Independant Cafes & Bistros Previewed at KnowMoncton.com

Metro Moncton's Independant Cafes & Bistros

Moncton Cafe & Bistro ReviewMetro Moncton has a phenomenal number of locations for enjoying coffee and dining out; however it can often seem that for the most part, these establishments are operated by national and international companies. (A browse through KnowMoncton's restaurant / coffee bar directory gives you an idea of the number and variety of all there is!)

That's all great; however, this region also has many unique, independently owned coffee bars and bistros and it's time to profile them! Here are the locations to discover and enjoy often in Metro Moncton:

Café Cognito

Café Cognito: Open Mon-Fri: 7:30 to 5:30p.m. & Sat: 10 to 4p.m. Closed Sundays and Holidays
Address:
700, Main Street, Moncton
Phone: 854-4888
Parking: City car park - nearest is BlueCross accessed from Assomption Blvd.)

Serving, local, freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee from Down East Coffee Roasters, Cafe Cognito sets the bar for a consistent, excellent cup of coffee be it a regular or espresso based cup. Their tea selection is of the excellent loose leaf variety and locally baked produce is available at the counter. There's a light lunch menu that includes some great healthy choices. Situated on the ground floor of the McSweeney Company Heritage Building the cafe's urban atmosphere also provides outdoor seating to enjoy the busy downtown.

Cafe calactus

Cafe Calactus: Open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day
Address: 125 Church Street, Moncton - corner with St. George Blvd. Moncton
Phone: 388-4833
Parking: Small car park

Ten years ago, Cafe Calactus began on Mountain Road with their vegetarian menu, and it was their attention to healthy options and getting it right that helped them to grow and move to their new home on the corner of Church and St. George.

With a larger and eclectic menu the food still caters to vegetarians and now, there are many options for those who don't eat dairy food and those who avoid wheat foods. From spicy and hot to simple but not plain - the food is delicious. Lots of healthy choices on the drinks menu too. The decor has been developed with love and attention and the atmosphere is uniquely inspired to give a very enjoyable evening out, as well as provide a short-stop to revive. This is a very healthy and relaxing location to enjoy!

Cafe Archibald

Cafe Archibald: Open every day from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
Address: 221 Mountain Road / 216 Gauvin Road
Phone: Moncton 853-8819 / Dieppe 853-7974
Parking: Small car park / Dieppe City Hall car park

For at least ten years, the people at Cafe Archibald have been serving the best crepes in town! The menu has an apparently endless combination of savory crepes and - if you have enough space - some delicious choices in sweet crepes. Also, there are pizzas made to order and all kinds of other good possibilities. The decor gives a unique atmosphere and the terrase is excellent when the weather cooperates. Building on this success you can also find a new version of Cafe Archibald in Dieppe!

Lobster

For the best all round lobster resource for New Brunswick lobster. It's about lobster seasons, lobster festivals, eating lobster, lobster shops, how to cook lobster...

http://www.knownewbrunswick.com/Lobster/About-Lobsters-New-Brunswick-Shediac-Festivals.html

Buying lobster straight from the wharf in any of the New Brunswick fishing villages will heighten the lobster experience and there are excellent fish markets all along the Acadian coast and Fundy.
Buying from the Fish Market in town or the grocery store is a simpler option - just choose lobsters that show movement as they have to be alive immediately before cooking. Straightening out their tail to see if it springs back is good test.

Lobster needs to feels heavy for its size. Squeeze the sides of the lobster's body for a firmness that doesn't yield to pressure...

Lobster Claw

To serve lobster, the shell can be broken apart with lobster crackers to get at the meat, or the lobster can be cut in half down its centre with a strong knife. The claws can be cut open with a strong knife too. All of the lobster is edible except for the shell, the small stomach behind the head and the dark vein, running down the back of the tail. The red matter - roe - of the female lobster is considered a delicacy....

About Lobsters in New Brunswick

About Lobster in New Brunswick: Everything you need to know

About Lobster | Lobster Shops & Fisheries | Select, Cook & Eat Lobster | Dine Out on Lobster | Lobster Seasons

Lobster TrapsLobster is fished from the North East & South East New Brunswick waters and is a valuable seafood export for Canada. Here in the Maritimes, the lobster has changed in its significance over the past century or so.

Initially, lobster was a staple for local people and lobsters were so under-appreciated that in lobster season they were used as fertilizer in the fields.

Lobster processing facilities and transportation possibilities opened up the enjoyment and appreciation for lobster at the table locally, across Canada and beyond Canada. Eventually, eating, enjoying and craving lobster became widespread. Now, each lobster season is much anticipated and celebrated. The industry has developed from a basic, local food to serious business, with exports and a lively tourist attraction for the fishing regions.
